Title
Neutral skeleton surrounded by female figures, by Elstrack (1615)
Description
This image is the title-page of The History of the World by Walter Ralegh (1615).
The image represents the globe in the top centre, two female angels on each side, a woman in the centre underneath the globe holding it and two more female figures at each side of the woman. Underneath, a skeleton representing death (Mors) and another figure (Oblivio) back to back. All the allegorical figures are clearly female, although the skeleton is neuter and the gender of Oblivio, due to its association with Mors, is also not clear.
