Death as a King and the angel of death, by Schön (1532, c.)

Picture243.png

Title

Death as a King and the angel of death, by Schön (1532, c.)

Description

The woodcut represents an army lead by an officer on a horse. Prisoners, women and animals are also represented, in addition to a wagon being pulled by a horse on the left. On the left, death represented by a winged skeleton on a horse holds an hourglass and wears a crown. Two skeletons in rags with hats accompany the winged mounted skeleton.

Gender perspective: The two escorts represent the two groups, Turkisk and German soldiers as two different categories. However, the German women who accompany them do not have their own death figure, as if the category of gender were not necessary to be represented when it comes to dying.
