Description
This illustration, representing the death of a Queen appears in the second volume of the Miroer Salutaire or La danse macabre nouuelle, named: La danse macabre des femmes / Et le debat du corps et de lame by Guyot Marchant (1486).
According to the text, the illustration represents the death of a Queen although this is only visible through the reference in the text and perhaps because of the shroud, since in the skeleton there are no direct gender identifiers.
The text in the manuscript reads:
"La royne morte
Ie estoye royne couronnee
Plus que autre doubtee & crainte
Qui suis icy aux vers donnee
Apres que de mort fus attainte
Sur la terre ie suis contrainte
Destre couchee a la renuerse
Pour quoy est dure ma complainte
Bien charie droit qui ne verse
