Title

Transi of Guillaume Lefranchois, by Unknown (1446)

Description

Original title: Transi de Guillaume Lefranchois ("Transi of Guillaume Lefranchois").

This statue is a representation of "memento mori" or "transi". These monuments represent a deceased person in the form of a skeleton. In this representation, the portrayed body is in a state of decomposition transitioning into a skeleton with very little skin left. Instead of lying on the skeleton's back, this skeleton is turned towards its left side, its right leg crossed over the left leg. The skeleton is using its hands to cover its intimate parts. The skull is turned towards the left upper side with the mouth open. From the mouth, a ribbon is coming out and it is rolled around its arm and legs. The statue is represented with ears, hair on the back of the skull, and closed eyes. The skeleton is also covered with worms intensifying the illusion of decomposition in the statue.
