Title
Engraved title page Mikrokosmographia, by Crooke (1631)
Description
On the cover of this anatomy book, several scenes are represented. Most of these depict a scientific environment, such as a person attending another person's injuries, or a table surrounded by men pointing at and inspecting the inside of a person's skull. In the center of the cover, a naked man with wings on the left and a skeleton on the right hold a rectangle where the title of the book is written down. On both sides, a man and a woman are depicted with exposed internal organs.
Gender perspective: The skeleton representing Death to the left with an arrow is, by its position, situated close to the woman and in the balance of the image corresponds to the female side. it is however absolutely neutral regarding sex or gender markers. At the most, we can say that the arrow of death, instead of the scythe, connect the figure to an angel of death, a figure of sexual ambiguity.
