Title

Death next to a little girl, by Borch, (1656, c.)

Description

Original title: Dood naast een klein meisje ("Death next to a little girl").

"Death dancing next to a girl. In the left foreground you can see the girl's grave with the date on which the drawing was made or on which the girl died. On the right is a long funeral procession to the entrance of a church." (Translated description from Rijksmuseum, Netherlands,

Gender perspective: The image of the skeleton appears, as usual, gender-neutral, but the hair on the head and the use of an arrow instead of the scythe, as well as the gender of the young girl and the doll, point to a female identity of the skeleton.
