Skull as memento mori, by Robinson (1683, c.)

Picture258.jpg

Title

Skull as memento mori, by Robinson (1683, c.)

Description

The image represents a scene in nature. An artist sketching statues that appear in the scene sits on the bottom right corner. The statue on the right of the artist contains the images of two women. A skull with no gender-specific traits appears on the floor next to the artist.

The skull works as memento mori of the artist, but also as a reflection of his future and as indication of the transience of beauty of the women in the images, and thus of art itself.
