Title
Orior, by Ligozzi (1600, c.)
Description
In this image a female skeleton appears in the centre. On the left, a young man holds the skeleton's right arm and on the right a child is wrapped in a cloth.
The skeleton is clearly female, depicted with long wavy hair. The skeleton may even be represented as a mother, since the title in Latin (Orior) reads "I am born". The child represented on the right could either be a newborn or a soul. There could also be an element of self-portrait in this composition, in which death is mother, wife and destiny.
